LSAT Wing · Argumentative Writing
The writing room.
One decision, two perspectives, two criteria. Fifteen minutes against the set, thirty five minutes of writing, and a grade that criticizes structure and offers no model essay.
Councillor Rao, for the market
Restore the market hall as a working market
The hall was built as a market and served as one for a century. Restored as a market it serves residents every week of the year, in all weathers, and it preserves the building by using it for the purpose its fabric was made for. A building kept in its own work does not become a museum of itself.
The Millbrook Music Society, for the concert hall
Convert the market hall into a concert hall
The town's traders have mostly moved to the retail park, and a restored market would trade in nostalgia. The hall's vaulted roof gives it an acoustic no new building in the county can match, and a concert hall would draw visitors the town's shops and inns would serve. Preservation that empties a building of audiences preserves the shell and loses the town.
The town of Millbrook holds a grant that can fund one of two restorations, and must choose. The council will judge the choice against two criteria: which restoration serves the town's residents through the whole year, and which better preserves the building the town's history is written in.
